Tips for looking after yourself and others in a heatwave
Heatwaves like the recent one are unfortunately likely to become more common. As we approach summer, it's important to prepare and to know how to look after yourself and others.

- Keep an eye on weather forecasts to make sure you’re aware of any potential weather warnings – apps on your phone, news and weather on the TV/radio and the Met Office website are all good ways to stay aware.
- Know your neighbours to make sure you’re aware of anyone who may be more vulnerable to the heat or who might need support, and so you can share information, resources and tips. Exchange contact information so you can more easily keep in touch with each other in the midst of any incidents.
- Know the risks and symptoms of things like dehydration, heatstroke and heat exhaustion, and how to avoid them.
- Try to keep your house cool from the outset, being vigilant in blocking out the sun and hot air in the day, and letting cooler air in at night (if it is indeed cooler!).
- Prepare for potential water shortages or power cuts – charge battery packs, prep torches, have a stock of some water and food so a short interruption doesn’t become an emergency.
- Look after pets – don’t walk your dog in the heat, make sure there is plenty of water available, keep a close eye on them to make sure they aren’t showing signs of over-heating, such as excessive panting.
This is not an exhaustive list. There are more tips, information and links available on the Met Office website.
